GENERATION VERDANT PROJECT

A project to develop food independence and waste-free communities

Earth Stewards was launched in 2020 in response to a local event during the COVID plandemic in Reno, NV.

After Reno’s only farm-to-community food drop program shut down, we became determined to not rely on any food co-op, grocery store or farmer for our food.

That decision gave us a responsibility to learn how to grow food in one of the most challenging economic and environmental environments in the country, the high desert of Northern Nevada.

HOW WE STARTED

We began developing our own fertile growing soil for food-independence in the desert, and after seeing how easy it is, we committed to make this soil available to city dwellers so they could grow their own fruits and veggies year-round in their apartment balconies, kitchen windows or back yards. Soon, we began collecting food scraps, leaves and twigs from households who wanted to grow their own food and started making soil from the rotting items in their garbage cans, using the same method for our high desert food garden.

We also saw the opportunity to teach communities a new way of seeing their “waste” as every vegetable, egg shell, coffee ground, leaf, grass, fruit (and every other kind of “waste”) can be used to create something that can serve families, communities and the Earth for generations.

By redirecting trash from dumpsters to compost piles, communities are becoming food-independent and waste is becoming a thing of the past!

OUR PROCESS

Contributors discard their kitchen, garden and yard waste in 3 bins.

Each bin holds specific items to create layers that are used to make the soil as follows:

Bin 1: Mycellium Producer

Bin 2: Soil Softeners

Bin 3: Nitrogen Fixers

When the bins are full, the Contributor contacts the Collector to empty each bin.

We take the materials from Bin 1, Bin 2 and Bin 3 and bring them to our processing facility to layer them in a compost pile.

In about 8 - 10 weeks, the compost pile becomes black, soft, fertile soil and returned to the contributors for growing healthy produce all year long!

Learn the full process step-by-step in our free e-book (just 5 pages)!

We’re always looking for more Gen V’s!
